U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Conducts Workshop for Polish Agencies
20 October 2010
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) conducted a workshop in Warsaw on October 11-12 for about 100 Polish Government officials from a wide variety of ministries, regulatory agencies, and provincial governments. The workshop focused on high-level regulatory issues (legal frameworks, phases on regulatory oversight, and regulatory functions), technical inspections, and construction inspections. The NRC team concluded its visit with consultations at the Polish Atomic Energy Agency (PAA) on October 13.
The Polish Ministry of Economy invited NRC to conduct the workshop during the Poland – U.S. Economic Roundtable, July 13-14, 2010, at which time the Joint Declaration Concerning Cooperation in the Nuclear Energy Sector was signed by the U.S. Department of Commerce and Energy and the Polish Ministry of Economy on July 14. It was agreed that this workshop would occur as a concrete follow-up to the signing by PAA and NRC of an Arrangement for Cooperation in Nuclear Safety Matters, which took place in Vienna on September 22.
Ambassador Lee Feinstein said, “Given our common interest in increasing energy security and reducing carbon emissions, the United States and Poland are expanding their cooperation to ensure that nuclear power can safely and securely contribute to these aims.”
