Ambassador Victor Ashe spent Monday, January 22, in Krakow and the
neighboring townships (gmina). He met the newly appointed Marshal of Malopolska
Province – Mr. Marek Nawara – and discussed plans to improve the business
climate for foreign investors. The ambassador visited also the Historical
Museum, with its outstanding collection of cribs, and Kazimierz, where he met
famous naïve art collector Leszek Macak in his Galerie d’Art Naif at Jozefa
St.
In the afternoon the ambassador traveled to four gminas located to
the west of Krakow. In Alwernia he met Mayor Jan Rychlik and toured the local
Fire Brigade Museum, home of a 1942 US Army Dodge truck converted to a fire
engine after the war. Both the ambassador and mayor then visited Alwernia’s St.
Bernard Monastery. In Chrzanow Ambassador Ashe visited the local museum and one
of the largest Jewish cemeteries in the region, currently under renovation (more
than three thousand grave stones). Later, the ambassador was hosted by the mayor
of Chrzanow, Ryszard Kosowski. On the way back to Krakow, Ambassador Ashe met
Adam Adamczyk, mayor of Trzebinia, and Mayor Elzbieta Burtan Wojt of
Zabierzow.
