On the occasion of International Education Week, the U.S.-Polish Fulbright Commission sponsored a conference on “Perspectives of U.S.-Polish Academic Exchanges” at the library of Warsaw University.  Addressing a distinguished group of university officials, professors, students, Fulbright scholars and alumni from more than 30 institutions of higher education from all around Poland, U.S. Ambassador Lee Feinstein underscored the importance of academic exchanges, not only in enriching the perspectives of participating students, but in forming the foundation of friendly relations and mutual understanding. The Ambassador recognized the Polish government’s increased contribution to the Fulbright program, which will expand the exchange opportunities between Poland and the United States. The implications of this increased contribution are significant.  It will place Poland as one among relatively few Fulbright Commissions in Europe that receive equal shares of funding from the U.S. and host government. The Ambassador also underscored the role of the Embassy and the Fulbright Commission in promoting partnerships between U.S. and Polish universities, as well as in advising students interested in pursuing studies in the United States.

Visiting U.S. education consultant Donald Martin provided an overview of graduate study in the U.S.  The Embassy’s Cultural Attaché Chuck Ashley discussed newly released statistics on international education published in the 2009 “Open Doors” report.  Panels of current and former exchange students and scholars discussed the significant impact of exchange programs on one’s academic career and everyday life.  Educational Advisors from the Embassy and Fulbright Commission outlined the application process and highlighted sources of financial support.   Students also had the opportunity to ask a Consular Officer about student visa application procedures.  The conference showcased the robust opportunities for international  exchange and cooperation between the United States and Poland, and was a forum for both conference organizers and participants to exchange information, network, and learn about new opportunities for collaboration and cooperation.
