“Democracy Is…”

The U.S. Department of State and YouTube invite you to submit your short video that completes the phrase "Democracy is…" between now and 31 January 2009.  The winners of the global video challenge -- one from each continent -- will travel to the United States.  If your video is chosen, you will see your creation on the big screen at gala events in all three cities.  The Hollywood and New York events will be hosted by the Directors Guild of America, and the Washington DC gala event will be hosted by the Motion Picture Association of America in October 2009.   You will also have the chance to meet with filmmakers, democracy activists, and other people who want to hear your story.  

Three videos from Poland will be selected to go on to the semifinals for Europe.  The grand prize winner will be selected through a global voting process via YouTube.  The top Polish films will be screened around Poland in February and March of 2009, with the three semifinalists selected during the New Media/New Democracy Forum at Fabryka Trzciny in Warsaw in March 2009.

To enter, participants must be 18 or older.  Videos should be three minutes or less, in English or with English subtitles, and must respond to the phrase, “Democracy Is…”  Complete rules are available in English and Polish on the U.S. Embassy website, poland.usembassy.gov.
