Fran Drescher departed Poland after a five day visit to Warsaw and Krakow as a Public Diplomacy Envoy for the U.S. Department of State. Ms. Drescher, who is widely known for creating the role of “The Nanny” in the U.S. sit-com, has taken on a new role as a cancer survivor: promoting early detection of cancer (in Stage 1) and fostering health issues. Ms. Drescher founded the non-profit organization “Cancer Schmancer” Movement. While in Poland she was supporting U.S. public diplomacy efforts, including working with health organizations and women’s groups to raise awareness of women’s health issues, cancer awareness and detection, and patient empowerment and advocacy. Other stops on Ms. Drescher’s first itinerary as a Public Diplomacy envoy have included Romania, Hungary, and Kosovo. After their meeting at the embassy Friday morning, Ambassador Victor Ashe commented: “Fran Drescher speaks a heart-felt and inspirational message that I hope will heighten awareness of health issues, and especially, the importance of early detection of all types of cancer. We are delighted that she has taken the time to come to Poland and share this vital message with audiences here.”
