Ambassador Reannounces 2008/2009 Borlaug Fellows Program

24 April 2008

U.S. Ambassador to Poland Victor Ashe reannounced this week the 2008/2009 Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program for Poland, through which two selected Polish candidates will be offered a short-term (four to six weeks) scientific training and collaborative research fellowship at a participating U.S. land-grant university, government research facility, other nonprofit institution or private company in the United States.

The establishment of this year’s program is the result of close cooperation between the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Persons interested in being considered for a 2008/2009 Borlaug Fellowship should submit an application to the Embassy’s Office of Agricultural Affairs.  Application forms and more information about the program can be found at http://www.fas.usda.gov/icd/borlaug/borlaug.htm (Applications for Poland are under Geographic Coverage).  Or you may contact the Office of Agricultural Affairs by telephone at 0-22 504 2337 or via email at AgWarsaw@poczta.onet.pl.

About the Borlaug Program

The overall goal of the Norman E. Borlaug Program is to promote agricultural development, food security and economic growth by increasing scientific knowledge and collaborative research to improve agricultural productivity.  The focus of the 2008/2009 program is related to the following topics:

- Forests and water resource management
- Forests and forestry, and effects on climate change
- Valuation of forest functions in terms of indirect social and ecological benefits – environmental/resource economics

The Program is named in honor of Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient who is often considered the father of the Green Revolution.  Dr. Borlaug visited Poland in 1982 and 1989 with a team of experts to study Polish agriculture and provide recommendations to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
