The U.S. Embassy sponsored Professor Bob Friedhoffer from the City University of New York, to perform at the Science Picnic held in Warsaw on June 14, 2008. During his four performances at the Science Picnic, several thousand people saw Friedhoffer perform on stage. Robert Friedhoffer performed throughout the world his “Scientific Magic Show” which gives audience members a chance to learn how magic works through a university developed program, consisting of laboratory demonstrations and experiments presented as magic tricks. The U.S. Embassy also had a tent at the picnic with the theme of the "optical illusion" where they held an arts competition for children ages 5 to12 years of age to color or create optical illusions. Thousands of children participated in the contest winning puzzles, frizbees, and small toys sponsored by the U.S. Embassy and McDonalds. The twelfth Science Picnic which is the largest outdoor science event in Europe is attended by over a 100,000 people annually and held in the vicinity of the historic New Town area of Warsaw. This year, the Copernicus Science Centre organized Science Picnic with Polish Radio and the theme was the “Language of Science: expressing complicated phenomena in a simple way.” During his visit to Warsaw, Friedhoffer also performed at area highschools, middle-schools, as well as for Warsaw orphanages and children's hospitals and gave a presentation on science education for the Corpernicus Science Center.
