Museum of History of Polish Jews Gets Hearing in U.S. Congress

18 March 2008

On March 13, 2008 in the Rayburn House Office Building, Washington, D.C., Congressman Alcee L. Hastings, chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (U.S. Helsinki Commission), held a hearing on H. R. 3320, an Act to provide assistance for the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw (its Senate analog is S. 2679).  The Bill would provide $5 million toward development and construction of the museum.

The Museum of the History of Polish Jews will be built across the street from the monument commemorating the Warsaw Ghetto.  It will explain the Jewish story in Poland from the Middle Ages until the present day. It is slated to open in 2010.  It is the first public/private partnership of its type in Poland, a joint project of the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the City of Warsaw and the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute.
