U.S. Ambassador Sends Letter Congratulating Lech Walesa on 25th Anniversary of Nobel Prize

5 December 2008

letterU.S. Ambassador to Poland Victor Ashe sent a letter of congratulations from the American people to former President Lech Walesa on the 25th anniversary of his being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.  President Walesa is celebrating the milestone anniversary December 6 in Gdansk. Ambassador Ashe expressed his regret that he was unable to attend the events planned for the occasion. In the letter, he wrote, “Lech Walesa” is a name that is synonymous with freedom and democracy throughout the world. Your name has joined a select few Polish heroes such as Kościuszko, Pułaski, and Pope John Paul II in becoming a household word in America, as well as in the rest of the world. History will forever note your role in bringing about the peaceful end of the Cold War.” For the full text of the letter, click here.
