U.S. Embassy Announces the 2008 Norman E. Borlaug Fellows Program
29 May 2008
The Office of Agricultural Affairs, U.S. Embassy, Warsaw, Poland, is pleased to announce the 2008 Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program for Poland. Under this program, two selected Polish candidates will be offered a short-term (four to six weeks) scientific training and collaborative research fellowship at a participating U.S. land-grant university, government research facility, other nonprofit institution or private company in the United States.
The overall goal of the Norman E. Borlaug Program is to promote agricultural development, food security and economic growth by increasing scientific knowledge and collaborative research to improve agricultural productivity. The Borlaug Fellowship Program is named in honor of Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient who is often considered the father of the Green Revolution. Dr. Borlaug visited Poland in 1982 and again in 1989 with a team of experts to study Polish agriculture and provide recommendations to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The focus of the 2008 Polish Borlaug Program is veterinary science. Research proposals on both animal health and food safety are encouraged. Potential scientific projects that would be considered include, but are not limited to, animal disease research on diseases such as highly pathogenic avian influenza, blue-tongue, and vesicular stomatitis, including diagnosis, testing methodologies, methods of treatment, and epidemiological control; food safety research including diseases such as E.coli O157:H7 and campylobacter, as well as residue testing and testing methodologies.
The establishment of this year’s program is the result of close cooperation between the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Polish Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Persons interested in being considered for a 2008 Borlaug Fellowship should submit an application to the Office of Agricultural Affairs of the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw by July 11, 2008. More information on the program and application criteria can be found on the program web site:
