The U.S. Embassy in Warsaw joined the League of Green Embassies, a group of 28 missions around the world committed to reducing their carbon footprint. On January 21, U.S. Ambassador to Poland, Victor Ashe signed the Statement of Principles, which demonstrates our commitment to making the Embassy more environmentally friendly. The Warsaw Green Team was established in November 2008 to monitor the mission’s environmental impact, advise post management on ways to limit harmful activities, engage in energy savings, promote recycling, and educate members of our community on “green” practices.
The initiative began at the Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden and has spread to many Embassies, mainly in Europe. Current Green League members are in Abu Dhabi, Ankara, Athens, Berlin, Bern, Bratislava, Brussels (Embassy plus EU and NATO), Budapest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Geneva, Helsinki, Kathmandu, Lisbon, London, Luxembourg, Madrid, Oslo, Paris, Rome, Sophia, Stockholm, Tbilisi, Valletta, Vatican City and Zagreb. The Warsaw Green Team has already been distributing energy efficient Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs to Embassy housing residents and is looking into other projects such as water savings, energy savings, car-pooling, recycling opportunities for housing residents, reducing plastic use and composting.
