U.S. Ambassador to Poland Victor Ashe opened the grand finale of the “Treasures of the Earth” contest for elementary school children at the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw on December 11, 2007. The first place winners performed in elaborate costumes skits, songs and dances in the English language about environmental protection. Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer Hilary Renner and English Language Fellow Margaret Cholodecki gave out prizes to the first, second, and third place winners. The competition marked the one-year anniversary of the opening of the Young Learners Resource Center in Warsaw and the anniversary of the establishment of the “Young Learners Resource Center” in Warsaw. Last November, the Embassy and the City Center District of Warsaw opened the Young Learners Resource Center and since then numerous teachers have visited the Center to attend workshops and use resources and books. This is the second English-language contest organized by the Center and was a follow-up to the June 2007 “Food, Rhymes and Songs Festival.” The next contest will be held in March, 2008 and will be devoted to storytelling and writing fairytales.
