During a ceremony at the White House, Richard Edgar Pipes, a Poland-born American historian, received the 2007 National Humanities Medal "for his peerless scholarship on Russia and Eastern Europe and for his dedication to the cause of freedom. He has shaped and sharpened our understanding of the contest between liberty and tyranny."
