Szczecin Deputy Mayor Elzbieta Masojć and Deputy Cultural Attaché Hilary Renner signed an agreement of cooperation to open a Young Learners Resource Center in Szczecin in 2008 on December 4, 2007. The city of Szczecin is currently remodeling the community youth center where the new Young Learners Resource Center will be located. The U.S. Embassy will donate a large collection of books, audio materials, computer programs, die cut machines, and laminators. The Young Learners Resource Center in Szczecin will open in the early spring of 2008.
The Center provides teachers with an opportunity to improve their teaching methodologies and curricula for teaching English to elementary school students. The collection includes teaching methodology books that can be borrowed or copied, as well as handouts with practical materials for classroom use, including lesson plans. The Resource Center has a “processing corner” where teachers are able to use the die cut machine or laminator to allow them to prepare their own teaching materials for classroom use. The center enables teachers to work together, exchange ideas and establish a sense of community amongst English teachers of elementary schools. The center also provides a venue for American speakers, cultural events and workshops for teachers. The concept behind the Young Learners Resource Center is a place where English teachers can borrow books, create materials and lesson plans, seek advice and exchange ideas with an English Language professional, and attend workshops, all free of charge.
The Srodmiescie District in Warsaw and the U.S. Embassy jointly opened a new Young Learners Resource Center for English teachers in Warsaw on November 20, 2007. The center, furnished by the city of Warsaw, and recently remodeled with funds from the U.S. Embassy. The U.S. Embassy plans to work with a number of different institutions to open similar centers in other Polish cities.
