Eugene Tzigane, an American conductor, won the Golden Baton at the 8th Fitelberg International Conductors Competition in Katowice that ended November 25, 2007. Another American, Sean Newhouse, won the Bronze Baton. Four of the six finalists were U.S. citizens. The Katowice competition is regarded as one of the most challenging worldwide, where 35 conductors from all over the world compete to prove their conducting skills in a repertoire that ranges from classical to contemporary music. "Congratulations to the two American conductors who won in Katowice, and good luck to everyone who participates in the future of this important competition," remarked U.S. Ambassador to Poland Victor Ashe.
