U.S. Ambassador to Poland Victor Ashe traveled through the Lower Silesian
region of Poland January 28-29. Ambassador Ashe met the newly appointed Marshal
of the Province, Professor Andrzej Los, and Chairman of the Provincial Council,
Professor Leon Kieres. They discussed the general economic development of the
province and the tension between local and central government that can occur in
a democracy. The Ambassador also visited the two small townships of Wiazow and
Strzelin where he met Henryk Ozarowski, the Mayor of Wiazow, and Jerzy Matusiak,
the Mayor of Strzelin. Both mayors stressed the need to improve the road network
and infrastructure under their jurisdiction as well as upgrading the general
standard of living.
A separate part of the trip was devoted to artists
who live in Wroclaw and the nearby vicinity. In Oborniki Slaskie, Ambassador
Ashe met Lukasz Huculak – a young and very promising painter whose works are
presented in galleries and exhibitions all over Poland. Professor Lidia
Kupczynska-Jankowiak showed the Ambassador her recent ceramic works at her
workshop at Wroclaw’s Academy of Fine Arts. Finally, Ambassador Ashe visited an
artists’ colony in Ksiezyce - a small village between Wiazow and Strzelin -
where he met Elzbieta Walaszek, who specializes in ceramics, and two painters:
Eugeniusz Minciel and Urszula Wilk.
