Film Screening: Miss Representation
29 November 2011
U.S. Embassy sponsored a second screening of the documentary film Miss Representation. The film explores the conflict between reality and the media’s portrayal of women.
Following the screening, Sandra Frydrysiak from the Fundacja Gender Center led a debate on the effect of media on gender relations. Agnieszka Mrozik, an American studies and media specialist, Agnieszka Grzybek, a political leader and women’s rights activist, and Anna Loszuk, journalist from TOK FM radio, participated in the debate.
This film was shown for the first time in Poland on September 19th, through the joint efforts of the American Embassy and Vital Voices Chapter Poland. This second screening is part of the “Lupa Obscura” cycle, showcasing films that deal with gender.
Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom and produced by Girls’ Club Entertainment, Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media con-tribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media's limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful.
The screening took place at the Pałac Staszica, ul. Nowy Świat 72.
