Rediscovering America: A Generation Later Tomasz Tomaszewski and Małgorzata Niezabitowska Exhibit and Reception

5 January 2012

On January 10, U.S. Ambassador to Poland Lee A. Feinstein will host an event in honor of Małgorzata Niezabitowska and Tomasz Tomaszewski as they embark on their new project, “Rediscovering America – A Generation Later.” The exhibit will feature photographs from their original project, “Discovering America,” featured in National Geographic Magazine 25 years ago.  This spring, with U.S. Embassy support, they will again make the journey “a generation later” to the United States and re-visit many of their original locations.

Media are invited to attend a special media viewing at the Ambassador’s residence at 18:15 followed by a reception featuring remarks by Ambassador Feinstein, Tomasz Tomaszewski, and his wife Małgorzata Niezabitowska.  Please RSVP to WarsawMedia@state.gov or 22 504-23-23.

About “Rediscovering America: A Generation Later”

The up-coming trips, the first through the American South, the second documenting the Midwest and the North, recreate an earlier project undertaken by the professional couple in 1986 and 1987 for National Geographic Magazine. Małgorzata Niezabitowska, the journalist, and Tomasz Tomaszewski, the photographer, brought back to Poland outstanding impressions through their words and photos.  Their project, “Discovering America”, was featured in a 100-year Anniversary edition of National Geographic magazine in 1988. The story was chosen by readers as one of the best for that year, and became an enormously popular photo exhibit at home in Poland.

This year’s trip will result in a new book and exhibit, which will debut in Warsaw and later travel to major cities in Poland. Selected material will be published in the Polish edition of National Geographic Magazine.
