News about Borlaug Scientific Program
Poland’s first Borlaug Fellows, Julia Gorecka, Izabela Tanska, and Mariusz Maciejczak recently completed their studies in the United States. Each Fellow spent up to six weeks researching issues related to biotechnology in agriculture. One Fellow studied at Michigan State University and one at Iowa State University, while the third conducted research in Washington, D.C. Hopefully, the results of their research will assist their future work in Poland and strengthen ties between the scientific communities of Poland and the United States.
Under this year’s Borlaug Fellows Program, Magdalena Borzecka-Walker and Krystyna Malinska have been selected to study issues related to biofuel production. Both Fellows will spend over five weeks at the University of Georgia undertaking research projects accepted earlier by a selection committee. They also will attend the 2007 Norman E. Borlaug International Symposium scheduled to be held in October 17-19, 2007 in Des Moines, Iowa. Organized by the World Food Prize Foundation and the Borlaug Foundation, the event will include participation by Dr. Norman Borlaug after whom the foundation is named.
The goal of the Norman E. Borlaug International Agricultural Science and Technology Fellows Program is to promote food security and economic growth by increasing scientific knowledge and collaborative research to improve agricultural productivity.
Under this program, qualified Polish scientists, faculty and policy makers are selected for educational fellowships lasting between four to six weeks at participating land grant universities, government research facilities and other institutions in the United States.
The establishment of this program in Poland is the result of close cooperation between the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and Warsaw Agricultural University.
