Black alphabet
Exhibit Opens at Zachęta National Gallery

Black alphabet, the first presentation in Europe of a group exhibition from the U.S. focused on the most powerful elements in contemporary American art created by African American artists, opened at Warsaw’s Zachęta Gallery on Friday, September 22 at 7:30pm. Ambassador Victor Ashe, an Honorary Patron of the Exhibit, joined Zachęta director Dr. Agnieszka Morawinska and 14 of the artists in welcoming the crowd of hundreds of opening night attendees. The Ambassador told the crowd that the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw is proud to be one of the sponsors of Black alphabet, which will be exhibited at the Zachęta Gallery through November 19, 2006.

Black alphabet is planned as a survey of contemporary art and an extensive presentation of some 40 artists working in different media - painting, sculpture, photography, video, video installations, performance and sound and digital projects. This multiform exhibition presents works by artists of different generations and from different art scenes across the United States. Black alphabet presents the most important contexts and the complexity of the art created by African-American artists: an art full of concepts, energy and power, consisting of multiple voices and attitudes, and conceptualized by a vast variety of terms, notions and issues. In this regard, the “alphabet” that acts as the frame of the exhibition refers to major issues to conceptualize the principal contexts within which the complexity of African American art is presented. Black alphabet has an important role to play in highlighting African American art in Poland and in Europe. For more information, please visit http://www.zacheta.art.pl/
