Amb. Hill Departs; Amb. Ashe to Arrive

17 July 2004

Ambassador Christopher Hill left Poland on July 9 to assume his new duties as the Ambassador to the Republic of Korea.

The new U.S. Ambassador to Poland will be Victor Ashe, who has a long history of public service, having served over 31 years in elective office at the state and local levels in Tennessee. In December 2003, he completed 16 years as Mayor of Knoxville, making him the longest serving Mayor in the city’s 213-year history.

Ambassador Ashe is expected to arrive in Warsaw later this month.

Meantime, Cameron Munter will serve as Chargé d'Affaires ad interim. Mr. Munter, who has been the Embassy's Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) since July 2002, previously served in Warsaw (1986-1988). He came to Warsaw as DCM from Washington, where he served on the National Security Council staff (1999-2001).
