U.S. Embassy to Open First "American Corner" in Poland

7 October 2003

U.S. Ambassador to Poland Christopher Hill and the Rector of Łódź University, Prof. dr hab. Wiesław Puś, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) establishing the first "American Corner" in Poland. The Corner, expected to open by the end of the year on the university campus, will provide information about the United States to the general public. It will also provide a venue for speakers, events for alumni of exchange programs and meetings with American Studies and English language teachers. More American Corners are expected to open throughout Poland in the coming years.

"We are pleased to be opening this American Corner in Poland's second largest city," said Amb. Hill. "We hope this expands contacts between the people of Łódź and the U.S. We look forward to opening others in the future."

The American Corner in Łódź will be operated in partnership between the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw and Łódź University. It will be located in the Department of Management at ul. Matejki 22/26.

"For many years, Łódź University has maintained close research and academic contacts with American universities," said Prof. Puś. "We are good friends, and as good friends we cooperate in many segments of life -- in sciences, culture, and economics. I am proud that Łódź University will contribute to propagating knowledge about the people of the United States of America and the values they cherish."

"American Corners" is a public outreach initiative in which U.S. embassies worldwide make information about the U.S. available and develop programming spaces outside of the capital cities by partnering with local institutions. The American Corner in Łódź will serve not only students and staff of Łódź University but also the general public -- the citizens of Łódź -- who are interested in the U.S.

The Embassy's Public Affairs Office in Warsaw will provide initial and sustaining donations of books and other materials. "American Corner" will be staffed by two university employees.
