On December 8, Ambassador Ashe met with Polish Sculptor Prof. Magdalena Abakanowicz and the Commissioner of the Chicago Park District Cindy Mitchell to discuss Prof. Abakanowicz’s gift to the City of Chicago. Warsaw and Chicago are Sister Cities and in connection with this ongoing relationship the Polish Ministry of Culture and a private Polish foundation are supporting the gift of 100 monumental cast iron figures, each nearly nine feet tall, which will be installed in Chicago’s Grant Park in 2006. Following the meeting, Ms. Mitchell and the Embassy’s Public Affairs Officer traveled to the foundry outside of Poznan to view Prof. Abakanowicz’s work in progress.
