The Knights of Columbus is one of the largest and best known Catholic fraternal organizations in the world. Founded in New Haven, Connecticut in 1882, the Knights now have more than 1.7 million members world wide. Having been encouraged by the late Holy Father John Paul II, they are now looking to expand their fraternal and charitable activities to Poland, where they have already been in contact with key church leaders. Ambassador Victor Ashe hosted a delegation led by Senior Vice President Ronald Tracz and Supreme Master Joseph Schultz on December 6th. The delegation visited Warsaw, Łomża, and Radom during the week of November 30th to December 7th. They had individual meetings with Cardinal Józef Glemp, and several other prominent bishops, and held larger scale meetings with groups of laity to encourage membership. They hope to return to Poland to conclude formal establishment activities for the organization in January 2006.
