Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ) visited Warsaw March 23-25 to meet with Polish NGO and government representatives in honor of Poland’s Second Annual National Day of Life. On Thursday, Congressman Smith met with Jerzy Halbersztadt, Director of the Museum of the History of Polish Jews, who provided a detailed briefing on his plans for the Museum (set to open in 2009) and the progress of international fundraising. Smith also met with Stana Buchowska, Director of La Strada Poland, and her staff. La Strada is Poland’s leading NGO dedicated to the fight against trafficking in persons and a major provider of victim assistance to Eastern European trafficking victims. On Friday, Congressman Smith met with Ambassador Ashe, and then attended a day-long program organized at the Sejm in honor of Poland’s Second Annual National life day. Smith delivered three separate speeches on the pro-life movement in the United States and praised the Polish government’s protection of children and women. Smith established initial ties with heads of the recently-formed Polish American Caucus, which is composed of 39 Sejm Deputies from a wide range of Polish political parties.
