Critics have called New York-based pianist/composer Dan Tepfer "brilliant" (Boston Globe), "one of tomorrow's jazz stars" (Eugene Weekly) and "certainly among those clearly willing to play with familiar formulas and take new approaches, even as he incorporates strokes from the masters" ( Jazzreview.com). He tours internationally as leader of his trio and has released a debut CD which was voted one of the ten best albums of 2005 by Cadence Magazine. Tepfer was awarded both the first prize and the audience prize at the 2006 Montreux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition and was most recently named the 2007 Cole Porter Fellow in Jazz of the American Pianists Association. He has performed with jazz greats Lee Konitz, Steve Lacy, and Bob Brookmeyer, and has studied with Martial Solal, Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner, Danilo Pérez and Bob Brookmeyer. With the exception of the Krakow performance, Dan will appear with Aidan Carroll on bass and Richie Barshay on drums.
Aidan Carroll, bass, raised in Oklahoma, now lives in New York City. His well-rounded musical interests began at a young age and were nurtured by his parents who themselves are musicians. Aidan has involved himself in varied musical forms and styles, and has performed on the drums, viola, piano, and particularly on the bass, his instrument of choice. During his undergraduate musical career, Aidan performed with ensembles that have included Concert Band, Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Band. Aidan's love of the bass earned him a full jazz scholarship at his alma mater, UCO, Edmond, Oklahoma, and lead to his acceptance at the prestigious 2006 Banff International Music and Jazz Workshop. He's presently a graduate student of John Patitucci at the City College of New York.
Richie Barshay, drums, is most noted as a member of the Herbie Hancock Quartet since 2003. He has established himself as a prominent musical voice of his generation. Regarded as "a player to watch" by JazzTimes magazine, he maintains a busy international touring schedule with some of today's top artists including Hancock, The Klezmatics, Kenny Werner, and many others. In September of 2004 he was named an American Musical Envoy by the U.S. State Department, along with the renowned Latin-Jazz ensemble Insight. Now based in New York City after 5 years on the Boston music scene, Richie began playing Jazz and Afro-Latin music during his youth and has expanded his focus to Indian rhythmic concepts and tabla, inspiring his 2005 recording debut "Homework" and the launching of his new band, The Richie Barshay Project
