On May 26th, 2007, the U.S. Embassy in Warsaw participated in the Science Picnic with a new exhibit titled “Return to the Moon” which highlights past space exploration with plans for future missions to the Moon. The inspiration for this exhibit came from the announcement on January 14, 2004 by U.S. President George W. Bush committing the United States to a long-term human and robotic program to explore the solar system, starting with a return to the Moon that will ultimately enable future exploration of Mars and other destinations. The exhibit had two parts – a display of photographs, video clips, and other visual materials showing the history and future of moon exploration and an educational component which engaged both students and children. During the picnic, many students visited the Embassy’s tent to test their knowledge about space through a computerized program and numerous children dressed as astronauts to have their pictures taken. CAO Jim Wolfe was also interviewed on Polish public television and footage of children posing in the space suits were filmed and broadcasted during the day of the picnic.
