Press Release – General

TRANSLATIONS: The first-ever multi-disciplinary art exhibition by foreign artists living in Warsaw.

Warsaw is home to ex-pats from all over the world and they contribute to the city in the usual ways, from the wheeling and dealing of corporate execs to the backpacker who came for a week and stayed for a year. But in May 2008, for the first time ever, over a dozen resident foreign artists have banded together to create "Translations", an event as diverse in its concept and scope as the origins of the artists themselves.

The combined theatre and gallery spaces of Komuna Otwock and Pracownia Wschodni are to host the extraordinary multi-disciplinary exhibition of traditional and digital painting, photography, drawing, sculpture, video, theatre, and music. Having never seen anything like it, the Warsaw City Council has assisted in the creation and staging of the exhibition through its Cross-Cultural Dialogue Fund, and the New Warsaw Express has joined as media patron.

The exhibition aims to be unique in its display and program, for example, by introducing the "Meet the Artists Sunday" afternoons, which will provide a chance that other exhibitions usually do not, or can not. Often, an artist will only attend the invitation-only opening, but the artists in "Translations" will attend on one of the Sunday afternoons to present and discuss their work with the public.

With the restrictions of the funding from the city, "Translations" will be a free-of-charge entrance event, so the group is interested in talking with ethical sponsors who can help bring together a seamless show. All the artists have their individual angle and viewpoint on the event, but stand with the common goal expressed in the quote by Goethe, that "Science and art belong to the whole world, and before them vanish the barriers of nationality."
