Sandra S. Phillips is curator of Photography at the
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art since 1987, where her main exhibitions have included Helen Levitt, 1991; Wright Morris: Origin of a Species, 1992; Dorothea Lange: American Photographs, 1994; Crossing the Frontier: Photographs of the Developing West, 1848 to the Present, 1997; Police Pictures: The Photograph as Evidence, 1997; Daido Moriyama, Stray Dog, 1999; Diane Arbus, Revelations (with Elisabeth Sussman) 2003; John Szarkowski, Photographs, 2004; Shomei Tomatsu: Skin of a Nation, 2004. In 1985 she received her Ph.D. from the City University of New York, with a dissertation on the Hungarian-American photographer, Andre Kertesz.
