Richard T. Davies, a career Foreign Service Officer who was US Ambassador to Poland from 1973-1978, died March 30 of leukemia. Ambassador Davies entered the Foreign Service in 1947 and was posted to Warsaw, where he met and married his wife. During his thirty-three year career in the U.S. Foreign Service, he also served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs (1970-1972), and as political officer in the NATO international staff(1953-1955). During World War II he served in the civil affairs/military government detachment in Belgium and Netherlands (1944) and in Germany (1944-1945).

Ambassador Victor Ashe made the following statement on Ambassador Davies: "Ambassador Davies served at a difficult time for Poland but it was his work and that of others like and with him who worked hard to maintain close ties between our two nations and laid the foundation for freedom to ultimately become a reality in Poland. We extend our deepest condolences to Mrs. Davies and his children while expressing appreciation for his service."
