Secretary Rice and NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer talking on December 8th

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice traveled to Europe last week in order to highlight the enduring importance of transatlantic relations and U.S. efforts to partner with Europe to address common challenges around the globe. At the same time, she addressed questions regarding how the USG handles enemy combatants captured in the war on terror.

The Secretary stressed that the United States and many other countries are conducting a war against terrorism, that it is the responsibility of all democratic governments to protect our citizens from attack, and that effective action requires international cooperation, especially in the area of intelligence. As a result of this intelligence cooperation and the information obtained from captured terrorists, attacks in Europe and the United States have been deterred.

At the same time, Secretary Rice made clear that the US Government respects its international obligations and does not engage in torture or render prisoners to other states in order to be tortured.

The United States and Poland do not differ on the vital importance of eliminating terror and we stand together in defending our countries and our citizens.
