Faces of America Exhibition

13 February 2006

The U.S. Mission to Poland is proud to support an exhibition of American portrait painting entitled Faces of America. It can be seen from February 16 to May 7, 2006 in the Gallery of the International Cultural Center in Krakow, Rynek Glowny 25. The exhibition is organized by the Terra Foundation for American Art in Chicago and the International Cultural Center in Krakow with additional financial support of the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the City of Krakow.

The exhibition, which features portrait painting from the late 18th to mid 20th century, includes the first presentation of early American painting in Poland. Portraits of women, statesmen, children together with self-portraits of artists offer a unique opportunity to examine the evolution of American portrait painting and its role in creating national identity. Canvases of William Meritt Chase, Frederick Frieseke, Richard Emil Miller, Frederick MacMonnies, Mary Cassatt and James Abbott McNeill Whistler comprise the exhibition.
