The U.S. Embassy commemorated the 227th anniversary of American
Independence at events across Poland. Fourth of July festivities began
in Gdańsk on July 2, as Ambassador to Poland Christopher R. Hill
welcomed guests at a reception in the historic Dwór Artusa in the
center of the city. Choruses sung both the U.S. and Polish national
anthems.
Following remarks by the Ambassador, citizens of Gdańsk
welcomed the American delegation with the firing of a small cannon from
a ship replica suspended from the ceiling of the ornate hall. The Old
Grey Goose, an American Folk Band hailing from Maine, performed
renditions of Arcadian folk music.
After the celebration in Gdańsk,
Ambassador and Mrs. Hill hosted an outdoor reception at their home in
Warsaw on July 3. Members of the United States Marine Corps presented
the colors, and as the flags waved, Americans and Poles sang their
national anthems. More than a thousand people attended the event. In
his remarks, Amb. Hill emphasized how the ties between the two
countries are growing ever-stronger.
