Ambassador Victor Ashe and Herbert Hoover III - grandson of President Herbert Hoover - laid a wreath at the Hoover Memorial in Warsaw on November 12, commemorating the contributions of President Hoover to Poland.
The original monument which was built in 1922 was destroyed in World War II. Today a memorial stone is in its place. Amb. Ashe and Mr. Hoover were joined by Institution fellows and staff who are in Warsaw promoting the opening of the exhibit "American Friendship: Herbert Hoover in Poland" at Warsaw's Royal Castle.
Prior to his presidency, Hoover personally headed the U.S. effort to help Poland survive the ravages of the Bolshevik War. The U.S. provided half a billion meals to starving Poles, including meals for more than one million children every day.
The exhibition at the Castle includes never before seen photographs, documents and historical artifacts illustrating Herbert Hoover’s commitment to the survival of Poland - from throughout his life as a private citizen, statesman, president, and above all as a dedicated humanitarian. The exhibit will be on display until January 16, 2005.
