In a phone call to Pres. Kwasniewski December 9, Pres. Bush thanked the Polish President for his mediation in the election crisis in Ukraine and said international efforts to appease the conflict had been an "excellent example of cooperation between the United States, the European Union, OSCE and NATO."
The President brought up how experiences in Poland offered valuable lessons for Ukraine.
The leaders agreed on the need for all parties to implement reforms in good faith to ensure a free and fair vote on December 26th.
They welcome the strong NATO-Russia statement on Ukraine agreed to by foreign ministers in Brussels.
The Presidents underscored the importance of international observation of the December 26th vote, and agreed that the international community needs to remain focused on supporting a peaceful, democratic process that reflects the will of the people in Ukraine.
Pres. Kwasniewski thanked Pres. Bush for his words of support and stressed that the success of the Ukrainian mission was in large part an effect of the United States' pressure for honest elections in the country. Lithuanian President Valdus Adamkus participated in the conference call with Presidents Bush and Kwasniewski.
