U.S. Ambassador to Poland, Victor Ashe, met with Miłosz Zielński, the first Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellow from Poland, on June 28, 2006. In July, Zieliński will participate in this youth-oriented program funded by the U.S. Department of State to focus exclusively on U.S.-European relations and to involve youth from all regions of Europe and Eurasia. The State Department hopes this Summer Institute will pave the way for the establishment of other programs under the Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellows Initiative aimed at building bridges between American and European youth. Daniel Fried, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, puts it this way: “Support for freedom is the foundation of our foreign policy, but America cannot advance freedom alone; Europe and the United States are partners in this great task. A new generation is growing up in Europe and America for which the Cold War, the advent of democracy in 1989, and the break up of the Soviet Union is history, not memory. It is only by renewing this close relationship between younger Europeans and Eurasians and American young people that we can continue this critical partnership in the 21st Century. And that’s why this program is so important to me.”
Zielinski is an outstanding student at the public high school in Ilawa in north western Poland and has won numerous academic competitions as well as working to create an NGO, the Association of Young Europeans, which promotes international activities for young people. In addition to support from the Department of State and the Embassy, he also obtained a small travel scholarship from NIDA, an English-teaching NGO, funded by the Polish American Freedom Foundation. Approximately 35 high school age students from Europe and Eurasia – from Norway to Kazakhstan - and 10 American high school age students from across the nation will visit Wake Forest University to participate in this program named in honor of America’s first diplomat. After meeting Zielinski, Ambassador Ashe commented “What a bright and intelligent young man, Milosz Zielinski is... I enjoyed our meeting immensely. Ben Franklin would be proud to know a person like him is in the program named for this distinguished American statesman and inventor."
