Representatives of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) are visiting Poland to support various institutions conducting bio-defense research. The projects to be funded include the development of a nano-bio-detector and wound healing studies with Poland’s Military Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (WIHiE) and Poznan University; in-vivo detection of radiation exposure with WIHiE; and the manufacture of magnetic components of radiodosimetric devices with the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. DARPA briefed the Embassy’s Office of Defense Cooperation (ODC) on December 11, 2009 and emphasized the long-standing nature of its cooperation with Polish biological institutes, especially WIHiE. The latter participates in the Global Emerging Infections Surveillance & Response program and recently carried out an important field study in Ukraine.
