Speaking at a news conference in Ottawa, Canada, on November 30, President Bush said he "appreciate[s] the efforts of President Kwasniewski of Poland to lead a delegation into [Ukraine] to help resolve the differences among the parties in a peaceful way."
Poland's neighbor to the east, Ukraine, has been in a crisis following presidential elections that the opposition party and international observers say were fraudulent. President Kwasniewski has been in Kiev to help mediate. President Bush telephoned President Kwasniewski to express "strong support" for his efforts and Europe's role in resolving the crisis.
"I want to again thank the -- President of Poland Kwasniewski for taking the lead," said Pres. Bush. "I -- as best I could, I tried to encourage him to continue to play a constructive and useful role. And hopefully this issue will be solved quickly, and -- and the will of the people will be -- will be known."
