Amb. Hill Witnesses Pipeline Signing Ceremony

16 January 2004

On January 16, Amb. Christopher Hill and dignitaries from the Polish Government witnessed the signing of a joint venture agreement between the Polish pipeline company PERN and the Ukrainian pipeline company Uktransnafta. The two firms agreed to develop a commercial company to extend the Odessa-Brody oil pipeline from Ukraine to Płock in central Poland.
Deputy Prime Minister Pol and his Ukrainian counterpart Deputy Prime Minister Klyuyev also exchanged notes, bringing an inter-governmental agreement to support this project into force. The U.S. supports the development of the Odessa-Brody pipeline as one of several alternatives to transport Caspian oil safely to western markets, avoiding transiting the environmentally sensitive Turkish straits.
