The Jaslo Lawyers Association "TEMIDA" on November 19 organized a conference entitled "Legal Assistance for Foreigners as a Tool for Preventing the Trafficking in Women."

The conference attracted more than 120 people, including police officers, border guards, judges, prosecutors, civic leaders and local government representatives from the Podkarpacie region.

Participants learned about and discussed new European initiatives, domestic laws and ways to combat trafficking in women and children in the region and throughout Poland.

In 2004, TEMIDA received a $28,000 grant from the U.S. Department of State's Trafficking in Persons Office.

This conference was the first of a series of workships on providing legal assistance to trafficking victims.

The workshops are intended to answer questions about solving operational, logistic and administrative problems regarding help for trafficked foreigners.

TEMIDA will work toward establishing direct contact with victims to encourage them to report their cases.
