Ambassador Ashe pays first visit to Grabarka, Siemiatycze and Drohiczyn

Setting a new first for a U.S. Ambassador in Poland, Ambassador Ashe visited the towns of Siemiatycze and Drohiczyn as well as the Grabarka Orthodox Monastery in the Podlaskie Province on June 23.

Ambassador Ashe visited the Orthodox monastery of Grabarka, which is a one of the most famous Orthodox pilgrimage sites in Poland.

The Ambassador’s visit was in response to an invitation from Metropolitan Sawa, the head of the more than 500,000-strong Polish Orthodox Church.

In Siemiatycze, the Ambassador met with participants of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Local Partnership Program, which provided U.S. know-how in reducing unemployment.

The Ambassador discussed the results of the program with Podlaskie Province Vice Marshal Karol Tylenda, Siemiatycze Starosta Jan Zalewski, Mayor of Siemiatycze Zbigniew Radomski and Director of the Podlaskie Provincial Labor Office Janina Mironowicz.

The Ambassador praised the Podlaskie Province for its active use of the program’s Local Economic Development Workshops to support the development of tourism and improve road infrastructure.

Visiting Drohiczyn, Ambassador Ashe met with Bishop Antoni Dydycz and Mayor of Drohiczyn Wojciech Borzyn.
