U.S. Embassy representatives attended the anniversary of a Polish WWII Partisan Fighting Group known as "Ponury-Nurt" in Wachock, Poland. Lieutenant Zdislaw Rachtan, President of the Partisan Association, Ponury-Nurt, invited the Embassy Group to attend. The U.S. group was guided throughout the day by Corporal Jerzy Bartnik, a Warsaw Uprising and Partisan "Home Army" hero and Virtuti Militari winner. Cezary Chlebowski, a well known Polish military author, historian, and Partisan fighter, also joined the American group providing excellent historical commentary on partisan actions during WWII. The event provided a wonderful opportunity for the American representatives to meet members and relatives of Ponury-Nurt and to better understand the incredible courage and perseverance displayed by the Home Army during WWII. |
