Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will travel to Warsaw this weekend to take part in observances for the 60th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. Secretary Powell will head the delegation, which will also meet with Polish officials.
The Warsaw Uprising of 1944 was a 63-day struggle to liberate Warsaw from Nazi/German occupation during World War II. The Polish resistance group - the Home Army - led the uprising while the Allied troops were breaking through the Normandy defenses and the Red Army was standing along the Vistula River.
The Secretary's trip to Poland will wrap up a week of international travel that begins July 26. He will also visit Hungary, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. In the Middle East, Mr. Powell will discuss the situation in Iraq and cooperation in the war on terror.
In Hungary, he will emphasize Hungarian-American relations and speak to a meeting of Hungarian diplomats.
