Students at the Department of Political Science at the Pultusk School of Humanities (about 35 miles outside Warsaw) organized a special event on Monday, October 25, to promote knowledge about the American political system, with particular emphasis on the Presidential Election of 2004. Two teams of students representing the Kerry and Bush campaigns participated in a mock Presidential debate that was based on the town-hall meeting debate held in St. Louis, Missouri, October 8, 2004.
The Dean of International Programs (and a former director of American Studies at the University of Warsaw), Prof. Krzysztof Michalek, took actual questions from the debate and directed them at the teams. The students had done research to answer the questions the way the candidates had done and the debate was spirited and lively. They even got in rebuttals and subtle references to campaign slogans.
After the debate, almost 100 students who attended participated in a mock election, which was won by President Bush.
Press Attache James Bond, Cultural Affairs Specialist Anna Wilbik-Switaj and Cultural Affairs Assistant Magda Wacisz attended the event and presented books to the students who were on each team.
