With the end of the summer vacation break, the Embassy resumed its American Thursday program on October 2nd. Our guest was Charles P. Ries, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs.

Participants at the meeting included undergraduate and postgraduate students, and research scholars from the International Relations and English Philology faculties of the University of Warsaw and a number of other Warsaw educational institutions.

Mr. Ries talked with the participants about U.S.-European relations. He covered a broad range of topics and was himself interested in the students' opinions about Poland's entrance into the EU, opportunities for Polish students to study abroad, and other issues of importance to students. He discussed differences between the Polish and American educational and health care systems, and answered questions ranging from the image of the U.S. abroad and how Americans perceive the E.U., to the treaty of Nice and other current events.

The goal of American Thursday program is to reach young Polish audiences that are interested in politics, culture, and social affairs. The monthly meetings present great opportunities to meet with eminent public figures who are ready to share their knowledge and experience with students and other interested Poles.

We hope to see you there next time!
