Thomas Sanderson, Deputy Director and fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies Transnational Threats Project, co-directs the Multilateral Terrorism Intelligence Sharing Project and the Private Sector Advisory Group.

Thomas Sanderson

Thomas Sanderson is deputy director and fellow in the CSIS Transnational Threats Project. He also codirects the Multilateral Terrorism Intelligence Sharing Project and the Private Sector Advisory Group. His work focuses on intelligence and information sharing; terrorist groups, operations, and crime; and U.S. national security policy. He comments regularly on these subjects in national and international media. In the winter/spring of 2005, he completed a Bosch public policy fellowship at the American Academy in Berlin, with research focusing on U.S.-German counterterrorism cooperation and threat perception.

Prior to CSIS, Mr. Sanderson served as a defense analyst with Science Applications International Corporation where he conducted extensive studies of terrorist groups for the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency, Office of Counterterrorism Analysis. Sanderson coauthored studies on religious-based terrorism, weapons of mass destruction and terrorism, and the psychology of extreme violence. He also held the 2001 Henry L. Stimson Center fellowship at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, where he authored "Chinese Perspectives on U.S. Ballistic Missile Defense," and "U.S.-Chinese Prospects for Counterterrorism Cooperation."

Mr. Sanderson is a terrorism course instructor, lecturer, and consultant for the U.S. government, private sector, media, and academic communities. He also has four years of development experience with nongovernmental organizations focused on Central Asia and Russia. He holds a B.A. in international relations from Wheaton College in Massachusetts and an M.A.L.D. in international security studies from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, also in Massachusetts.

Mr. Thomas Sanderson: Expertise: Terrorism and international crime, terrorist groups and operations, U.S. counterterrorism policy and operations, and U.S. foreign and national security policy. Thomas Sanderson is the deputy director of the Transnational Threats Initiative (TNT) at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, where he focuses on the convergence of terrorism and international crime, terrorist groups and operations, U.S. counterterrorism policy and operations, and U.S. foreign and national security policy. He comments regularly on these subjects in national and international media.

Prior to joining CSIS, Mr. Sanderson served as a defense analyst with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), U.S. government consultants based in McLean, Virginia. At SAIC, he conducted extensive studies of terrorist groups and terrorism policy for the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency. He has coauthored studies on religious-based terrorism, weapons of mass destruction (WMD) terrorism, and the psychology of extreme violence. Mr. Sanderson held the 2001 Henry L. Stimson Center Fellowship at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, where he researched "Chinese Perspectives on US Ballistic Missile Defense" (a Stimson Center paper). He also has four years of development experience with nongovernmental organizations, focused on Central Asia and Russia. Mr. Sanderson holds a B.A. in international relations from Wheaton College (Massachusetts), and an M.A.L.D. from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University.
