On July 31, as part of the Embassy Speakers Bureau program, Cultural Attaché Jim Wolfe visited Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Dzieci in Warsaw’s Mokotów district to present general aspects of American culture, history, and traditions to children from the poor and underprivileged families. The group of six-to-eight year old children listened as the Cultural Attaché explained to them the notions of American culture, democracy and freedom of expression. The children responded eagerly with a great deal of questions about American family life, movies, everyday customs, and various English words and phrases. The children also wanted to know how the United States of America originated as a country and asked a lot of questions concerning its geography. The CAO also answered questions about his diplomatic and personal life in Poland.
The Cultural Attaché presented the children with a book of photos presenting American lifestyles, landscapes and cultural life. Each young listener also received a summer edition copy of “Zoom In On America,” U.S. Mission Poland’s monthly publication addressed to youth, featuring a particular aspect of American culture in each issue. Embassy Warsaw’s Speakers Bureau provides a venue for sharing information on U.S. culture, society and values, engaging a youth audience that would not otherwise have direct contact with U.S. officials.
