On October 14, 2005, as part of Embassy Warsaw’s Speakers Bureau, Vice Consul E.J. Monster spoke to a group of 100 Polish high school students about life as an American diplomat in Garwolin, a small city 50 km from Warsaw. He described the variety of U.S. diplomatic posts, the need to be flexible as a Foreign Service Officer, and the differences between the U.S. and Polish Foreign Service. After the presentation, Monster answered questions from the students regarding differences in daily life between the U.S. and Poland, U.S.-Polish relations, and the U.S. war on terrorism. The students were particularly interested in learning about “real-life” America versus the America portrayed in films and the media. Monster encouraged the students to consider higher education in the U.S. as an opportunity to obtain a great education and not only expand their knowledge of the U.S.
Embassy Warsaw’s Speakers Bureau provides a venue for sharing information on US society and values with an audience that would not otherwise have direct contact with US officials. The students of Garwolin were able to hear first-hand about U.S. diplomatic service and through their questions gain additional knowledge about U.S. culture.
