On October 15th, as part of the Embassy Speakers Bureau program, Capt. Corey Shea of DAO spoke at the commemoration ceremony of the 226th anniversary of Kazimierz Pulaski’s death in the town of Warka. Every year, Warka, Pulaski’s birthplace, pays tribute to the Polish army officer who became a war hero of the American revolution, and remains deeply respected by both Americans and Poles. As the audience gathered around the Pulaski monument, the tribute commenced with the playing of the US and Polish national anthems by a band from the Polish Army. In his speech in Polish, Shea mixed historical references to Pulaski and humorous references to thoroughly engage the 250 member audience of townspeople, school children, and both municipal and national level governmental representatives. The commemoration event included the opening of an exhibit by Polish-American sculptor Jan David Kuracinski.
The ceremony was covered by local and regional print media. Although it didn’t make the national news, the event is one more example of how the Embassy Speakers Bureau reaches out to smaller and more remote, but inevitably enthusiastic and grateful audiences.
