PAS Officer Jarrett speaks on U.S. Government to students

On May 9, 2007, PAS Officer Melissa Jarrett gave a presentation on U.S. Government to a group of one hundred high school students in Warsaw.  The presentation focused on the role and importance of checks and balances in the U.S. Government.  Students actively participated in the presentation and volunteered to represent the three separate branches of the government.  The students were given a fictitious budget for the school and each branch of the government played a role in determining how the budget would be spent.  The students eagerly participated and played out their roles: the "President" exercised his veto power, "Congress" attempted to override the President's veto with a 2/3 majority vote, and the "Supreme Court" heard a challenge against the proposed spending plan.  As a result of the presentation, the students were given a clear picture of what checks and balances are in place in the U.S., and what role they play in a democratic system.
